Barbie Meets Godzilla

This story was written by Miss Goofy. She hopes you enjoy it. I hope you don't think she needs mental help. It has a twist and then another twist. Enjoy!

It was a fine day, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and there was a slight breeze. "What a fine day," said Barbie. "I think I'll go for a walk."
Barbie puts on her walking shoes and heads out the door. All of a sudden she runs into Ken.
"Hello Ken, how are you?" asked Barbie.
"Scared! There is a monster in town smashing everything!" yells Ken.
"Oh dear! What does the monster look like, Ken?" asked Barbie.
"Like a big, green lizard that's smashing everything," answered Ken.
"Oh my, that sounds like Godzilla."
"It looks like him too."
"I want to go see it. I'll see you later, Ken."
Barbie went on into town leaving Ken behind shaking his head. All of a sudden there was a loud roar.
"What was that?" asked Barbie to no one.
"I think I changed my mind," she said to herself.
"But what's life without a little adventure," she argued to the air.
Barbie decided to keep going. She turned the corner and saw...achoo... sorry, I'm fighting allergies. She turned the corner and saw the biggest, greenest lizard she'd ever seen and it was reaching out to grab her. She knew it was going to eat her. Barbie, who was already scared, turned and started to run. Godzilla was faster and he grabbed her.
"Help! Help me someone!" yelled Barbie. "Ken, someone, help me!"
"Oh no, Godzilla is going to eat me," yelled Barbie.
"Don't worry, Barbie, I'll save you," yelled Ken.
"Ken, watch out! He's going to grab you," screamed Barbie.
"Oh no, it won't," Ken yelled back.
Godzilla grabbed Ken. Barbie laughed.
"Oh shut up Barbie. It is not funny, we are about to be eaten."
"Oh yeah. HELP!" she yelled.
By now Godzilla has raised Ken up to the same level as Barbie, and they hear creaking metal.
"What was that?" they yelled to each other at the same time.
Godzilla opened his mouth and there on his tongue...was...a...ticket booth? What was a ticket booth doing on Godzilla's tongue?
"Hello and welcome to the 'Inside a Dino's Body' exhibit," said an official sounding voice. "Today we will find out about how a dinosaur's bod works," the official voice told them.
"We will be learning about the brain, heart, liver, digestive system, stomach and the urinary systems of the dinosaur," the voice continued.
"Wow," said Barbie and Ken. "This should be interesting."
"Oh yes, it is very interesting," the voice answered.
"I think I have had way too much fun for today. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow," said Barbie.
"I'm sorry, the exhibit is here for one day only," the voice told her.
"Well, I'll try to see it someday. I'm going home, see you later, Ken. I wonder how I get down," Barbie said.
We'll never know how to get off the exhibit without going through it. Barbie was stupid and walked into a set of gears and died.
The End.

Coming later today (I hope)

Miss Goofy presents:

Barbie Meets Godzilla

Hopefully sometime today it will be ready for publishing.

Ooops!!!!

I have not posted Miss Goofy's story yet. I goofed. She finished it (allegedly) but we still need to proofread and revise. Make any corrections that sort of thing. Hopefully we'll have it up by Friday. In the meantime, we're still plugging away. Music Man gave her a challenge of his own. If she can complete her next math book before the term ends then he will take her to have her hair dyed any color she chooses and he'll pay for it. If she finishes 3 months before the term ends then she can have her hair dyed and he'll buy her a video MP3 player. If she finishes by the end of January, then he will buy her a Wii, pay to have her ears pierced, buy the video MP3 player, and pay for her hair to be done. She seems determined to get that Wii. We'll see what happens. Poor Music Man, this could get expensive for him.

School Pictures

Not only is Miss Goofy in school, but so is Music Man. Now they are studying drastically different subjects, but they are both in school. Music Man is studying accounting. Miss Goofy seems to be studying "Charmed" reruns. And she's writing a story for schoolwork. She isn't getting a summer vacation this year. Not because she's goofed off, but we took our time off earlier in the year. While the weather was still cold and she wanted to be outside playing. Anyway, here are my two students hard at work.

Music Man

I think the flash may have partially blinded him. Notice the Rolaids in the background. Whoever said school wasn't stressful obviously didn't take hard enough classes.

Miss Goofy got mad at me for not announcing the name of her story in my last post and I almost forgot it this time. Okay truth be told I did forget to post it, but I'm editing this post to say: Drop by around July 7th, that's the Monday after the 4th to read "Barbie Meets Godzilla". An original piece written for her own amusement (and to fulfill a requirement from her mother) by Miss Goofy.

Music Man has corrected me. The flash didn't blind him, he was thinking. Sure, Music Man, go with that story, it sounds much better.

Working Hard

It’s a great feeling to work hard and accomplish something. Miss Goofy is in the middle of a challenge. I think she’s doing well, especially since her mom is so ill-prepared most of the time.

When I was in the fifth grade my teacher was a friend of my grandma’s and one weird day I was actually organized. I clearly remember her commenting how organized I was and how much like Grandma I was. I told Grandma about the comment and she laughed. She laughed hard. Harder than I think she’s ever laughed before. I always wondered about that. Now that I’m homeschooling my daughter I understand. I start the year pretty well organized. And then life happens.

Someone gets sick, or hurt. We have computer problems or just feel lazy or one of a million other reasons. I understand why homeschoolers get a bad reputation. I am the cause of the reputation some days. Other days I am the reason we have a great reputation. And by me, I mean Miss Goofy. That kid knows how to work hard when she wants to. Getting her to want to work, that’s my job. It’s a tough job.

In any event, Miss Goofy is working her hind end off. She’s enjoying watching me scramble to find her something to do while I fix the massive computer problem that is the tracking program I use for her schoolwork. There might be a reason I feel lazy.

Miss Goofy has agreed to have her story upon its completion published on this blog. I hope to have it up just after the 4th of July. I’ll save the title for next time.

Vacation is Over

So, we're back from vacation and now it's time to set up a new challenge for Miss Goofy. I think our new challenge is for her to write everyday. In addition to her regular school work. It must be a minimum of 4 sentences. It can be longer if she wants. But she must write every day.

By the way, for those who don't know, she is a fabulous writer when she wants to be. She is creative, funny and to the point. She writes what is on her mind and doesn't care what people think. She is fantastic.

Maybe I'll share something she writes here. That would be neat for her. I'll have to talk to her about it.

Anyway, challenge starts tomorrow and ends the Friday before the 4th of July. Wish us luck!

Challenge Results

Okay, so I didn't get to update during the challenge, but Miss Goofy met it with ease. She worked hard and enjoyed her studies.

Here's hoping she's up to it again. Our next challenge will be to complete her daily work through the 4th of July. It will begin the week of Memorial Day as we'll be on vacation until then.

I'll try to update more often with the next challenge.

In the meantime, GREAT JOB MISS GOOFY!!! YOU ROCK!!!

Week 2 of Challenge

I am so proud of Miss Goofy. She worked hard last week. Friday is kind of one of those days where I have to give her all weekend to complete her work. Her Grandpa, The Cranky Old Man, is home from work on Fridays, so it's much more difficult to do her work. She got most of Friday's work done. She lucked out in that her writing assignment continues today and for the rest of the week.

She has completed a quarter of the challenge. I am so proud of her for working so hard and I look forward to updating next week with the news that she's halfway done!

GOOD JOB MISS GOOFY!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

My challenge to Miss Goofy

Miss Goofy and I worked out a challenge of our own. She does a full day of work everyday for 4 weeks and then she gets one week off. That's 20 days. I think she can do it. She's already got 4 days in. I'm really proud of her too. She's working hard and she isn't complaining.

On another note, I'm a little frustrated with my school tracking software. I'm not sure what I've done but it is seeing some of her assignments and counting them as complete. So when I grade the work, enter the points and mark them complete it is double counting the time. Very frustrating. So, I'm re-entering the assignments in a new database. I'm also changing the way I do it a little. Hopefully that will take care of the problem. It is a bit time consuming though.

I'm going to begin working on my next essay on responsibilities later today when I need a break from lesson planning. We'll see how it goes. Have a great day everyone!

No Sermons Today

My last two posts have been a little preachy so today I'm posting challenges. My weight loss blog has a challenge. I'm trying to lose 20 pounds by my birthday in 6 weeks. My everyday life blog is looking for challenge ideas. I suggested vacuuming everyday for 6 weeks. If you have another idea click on my profile and then click on Morning Coffee with Micki and leave me a comment. So now I want an idea for schoolwork. I'm homeschooling my beautiful daughter and need an idea of a challenge and reward. And I'm drawing a blank. I think I'm going to give her her birthday off but that's in like 10 days.

So, any ideas? I want it to be something fun. Maybe a field trip? Well, in any event leave me a comment with your best idea and I'll post a poll later this week.

Obligations Part 2

Yesterday I wrote about some of my reasons to homeschool my daughter. Today I'd like to talk about my obligation to her. It's not enough to clothe and feed her. She needs more than toys and video games. She needs an education.

Why does she need an education? God commands me to educate her. God wants her to be knowledgeable so that she can protect herself. She needs to know when people are trying to hurt her and persuade her to do things she's better off not doing. Why can't she get that at public schools? Well you used to be able to. Now we are so worried about being politically correct and not offending anyone that kids don't get a chance to learn anything. Let's talk about history for a minute. We have short history compared to other countries. Not all of it is very "pretty", for example slavery. The act of one human being claiming another human being as property. It's a horrible practice. A lot of schools nowadays are downplaying slavery in U.S. history. Others are using it as an excuse for poor behavior by their students. What is the reality of slavery? Do your children know? Do they know that a lot people question who sold the slaves to the slave traders? Do you know this? What about the fact that this is not a new practice? Nor was it new in 1800's. What about the Israeli's? They were slaves for hundreds of years. Should we shield our children from the harsh realities of history? Should we pretty up what really happened? Throughout history people have been raped, murdered, taken hostage, turned into slaves and prostitutes. Smart, intelligent, happy men and women have been turned into drug addicted, depressed homeless people. Do we ignore this when teaching our children?

I believe we have an obligation to teach our children not only the "pretty" version or the "ugly" version. The story has to contain both to give our children an accurate picture of the world in which they live.

My obligation to her education is to make certain she is prepared for the world in which she will live. And if I don't think she's getting that education in public school, then to find another alternative. If I can't find a suitable substitute, then my obligation is to educate her myself. It's not enough to say the schools are not doing a good job. It's our duty to our children to give them the best education we can. Whether it's us personally teaching them or keeping tabs on their public or private school. Only we can decide for sure.

Have you met your obligation to your children's education today?

Obligations

As a homeschooler to whom are we obligated? Depending on your reasons for homeschooling I think your obligations vary. Obviously you are obligated to your children. If you're married then your spouse. Depending on the state or country your in, the government or board of education. Perhaps a homeschooling co-op. Perhaps other family members. Maybe the community at large as an example.

For me, my first obligation is to God. I believe he intends for me to homeschool my daughter. My beliefs don't agree with a great deal of things taught in public schools. I don't believe first graders need to be given a sex survey. I don't believe that it is wrong to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I don't believe that gang members should be allowed to terrorize my daughter.

I do believe that I am obligated to protect my daughter from growing up before she's able to handle the "real world". I believe that I should teach her patriotism. I believe that I should teach her to respect other people and that not everyone will agree with her opinions and views. And that that is okay. I believe that if my daughter wants to write about God or something that happened at church, she should be able to. I believe that she should be able to follow her interests and learn in a way that works for her.

Those are just some of the reasons I choose to educate my daughter myself. You don't have to agree with me on any of this. That's what makes this country wonderful. The freedom to disagree and still do what we feel is right.
